Every day that Dil Agha works at his backbreaking job at a brick kiln on the outskirts of Afghanistan's capital Kabul, from before sunrise to well after sunset, he digs himself deeper into debt.
He knows he will never be able to pay back what he owes to the kiln owner who lent him a few thousand dollars for a family emergency, and that when he dies, his children will inherit the burden that will ensure his family remains enslaved for generations.
He is one of hundreds of people that the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission calls the "slaves of the 21st century." They toil as indentured laborers at brick kilns that make millions of dollars a year for their owners. The law is powerless to help them and a government official says many in the government are too fearful to speak out.

On September 5, 2006, Eli Chomsky was an editor and staff writer for the Jewish Press, and Hillary Clinton was running for a shoo-in re-election as a U.S. senator. Her trip making the rounds of editorial boards brought her to Brooklyn to meet the editorial board of the Jewish Press.
The tape was never released and has only been heard by the small handful of Jewish Press staffers in the room. According to Chomsky, his old-school audiocassette is the only existent copy and no one has heard it since 2006, until today when he played it for the Observer.

Last Thursday, it was first reported that the Gmail account of John Podesta (Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman) was hacked in March through a "phishing" email, or the type of scam that tries to trick you into giving your login credentials to hackers. The hackers who got into Podesta's emails then archived the account and sent it to Wikileaks. On Friday, the latest daily batch of emails from Wikileaks included a chain starting with the phishing email, in which Clinton's tech support help desk actually told Podesta that it was a genuine Gmail communication.
It all started when Sara Latham, Podesta's chief of staff, forwarded the phishing email to Charles Delavan, an IT staffer from the campaign's help desk. Superficially, the email looked real...

Imagine if, during the Jim Crow era, a newspaper offered advertisers the option of placing ads only in copies that went to white readers.
That's basically what Facebook is doing nowadays.
The ubiquitous social network not only allows advertisers to target users by their interests or background, it also gives advertisers the ability to exclude specific groups it calls "Ethnic Affinities." Ads that exclude people based on race, gender and other sensitive factors are prohibited by federal law in housing and employment.

Filmmaker Facing 30 Years for Documenting Climate Action Stands Resolute, Determined
Lindsey Grayzel, along with cinematographer Carl Davis, was arrested and jailed on October 11 in Burlington, Washington after filming environmentalist Ken Ward, the subject of her current documentary. Ward, who was also arrested, was taking part in a #ShutItDown action to protest fossil fuels and express solidarity with those resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Freedom of the press is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The protections given to the press extend to documentary filmmakers, who bring context to a story that is not possible under the constraints of commercial news outlets," she said in a statement released to news outlets.
