Facebook has announced plans to check for 'fake news' using a series of organizations to assess whether stories are true
One of them is a website called Snopes.com which claims to be one of the web's 'essential resources' and 'painstaking, scholarly and reliable'
It was founded by husband-and-wife Barbara and David Mikkelson, who used a letterhead claiming they were a non-existent society to start their research
Now they are divorced - with Barbara claiming in legal documents he embezzled $98,000 of company money and spent it on 'himself and prostitutes'
In a lengthy and bitter legal dispute he is claiming to be underpaid and demanding 'industry standard' or at least $360,000 a year
The two also dispute what are basic facts of their case - despite Snopes.com saying its 'ownership' is committed to 'accuracy and impartiality'
Snopes.com founder David Mikkelson's new wife Elyssa Young is employed by the website as an administrator
She has worked as an escort and porn actress and despite claims website is non-political ran as a Libertarian for Congress on a 'Dump Bush' platform
Its main 'fact checker' is Kimberly LaCapria, whose blog 'ViceVixen' says she is in touch with her 'domme side' and has posted on Snopes.com while smoking pot

Russia kicked the U.S. out of any further talks about Syria after the U.S. blew a deal which, after long delaying negotiations, Kerry had made with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.
In a recent interview Kerry admits that it was opposition from the Pentagon, not Moscow or Damascus, that had blown up his agreement with Russia over Syria:
More recently, he has clashed inside the administration with Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. Kerry negotiated an agreement with Russia to share joint military operations, but it fell apart.
"Unfortunately we had divisions within our own ranks that made the implementation of that extremely hard to accomplish," Kerry said. "But I believe in it, I think it can work, could have worked."
Kerry's agreement with Russia did not just "fell apart". The Pentagon actively sabotaged it by intentionally and perfidiously attacking the Syrian army.

Two of Hillary Clinton's top aides and the State Department are fighting efforts to unseal videos of court-ordered interviews taken in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit concerning Clinton's private email server.
Aide Huma Abedin on Wednesday joined former Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills and State Department lawyers in urging a federal judge to keep the interviews under seal.
The transcripts have already been released, but the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch earlier this month argued that the videos should be made public now that the Nov. 8 election is over.
"In the same case, the group is pushing to force Clinton to provide answers to several questions she declined to answer on the creation of the server.
Clinton objected to the questions on the basis that they were outside of the scope of questioning ordered by Sullivan. Elsewhere in her response to the 25 questions, she famously claimed 20 times that she "does not recall" specific details surrounding the server."

Chambers Works was among a group of properties transferred to another company, Chemours, in 2014 and 2015 ahead of a proposed merger with Dow Chemical. According to the suit, the transfer was carried out to make DuPont a "more attractive merger partner."

A tiny organism at the base of the food chain, but vital for life to exist on Earth, is under threat, according to data collected by a NASA satellite that has been firing a laser into the ocean for a decade.
Phytoplankton, a tiny plant organism living near the Earth's poles, is an essential food source for ocean dwellers. It also sucks in carbon dioxide, assisting with the planet's carbon cycle, contributing to up to 85 percent of the planet's breathable oxygen.
The new findings by NASA worryingly indicate that the species' "boom and bust" population is heavily threatened by melting ice-caps caused by global warming.

It's Now Fallen, Former Hero, Sarah Silverman interviewing Bernie after the election. Her first question and Bernie's answer is a knee slapper.
His first serious answer tells Sarah straight up WTF was wrong with HER, Sarah; she was a fan of Clinton WITHOUT considering that Clinton has the WRONG policies.
Sarah is playing the perfect role as a (not so caustic) Hillary-Bot, continually coming back to problems with Trump. And Bernie keeps setting her straight. Fairly often, you can see Sara feeling a bit struck down and trying to take it all in... ...Not sure yet, but MAYBE this is having a REAL effect, at least on Sarah, in helping her / and Hillary bots grow out of their shit. And THIS is the right way to do it - not name calling, eye-poking, trying to make fun of them, kicking them when they're down. Instead, as Bernie is showing, you listen, and speak to their issues with a correct understanding of Progressive values, and, fundamentally, break their hyper-focus on the wrong things and redirect their attention to the correct issues (namely, public policy and in particular, our protracted battle with the ultra-rich).

Sarah asks about what liberals need to understand about Trump's supporters, given that they're racists, and he handles it delftly and then switches to say that he's not a liberal but a progressive and then goes on to explain why! Sarah interjects that SHE is now a progressive too - ugh- and Bernie then switches to explain that being liberal on social issues isn't enough because too many liberals aren't progressive in attacking the roots of the problem. ..."Progressivism is about taking on all of the fights of liberalism - to create a diverse society, non-racist society, but at the same time what a Progressive stands for is understanding that this country is, in many respects, moving toward an oligarchic form of society, and that you have a handful of Billionaires who control our economic and political life. AND, if you are not prepared to engage in that struggle, ... well, I don't think you're doing serious politics."
He's schooling her here in ways that she and a great many "liberals" NEED to be schooled. You can see her taking his blows hard. She stammers, "that makes sense" at one point, repeats it as she absorbs that she's been getting it wrong.
She MIGHT be salvageable. She admits, "I think there's something I don't understand."
She asks - at around 37 / 38 minutes in - a great question about "us vs them" versus "all of us", and Bernie gives a fantastic answer: "The 'us' isn't [racial], but rather 'us' is [everyday people with everyday concerns] and 'them' happens to be people today whose greed is out of control." (ie, the ultra-rich) ... he goes on to describe greed as an addition and an illness.

Brooklyn resident Raven Garcia is filing a lawsuit against the NYPD after the police entered her house without a warrant, shot her dog and then ransacked her home in an attempt to find evidence to justify their intrusion. Police were called to Garcia's house over an unpaid cab fee, but they had no warrant or justification to enter her home without permission.
Garcia had been out drinking with her friends on that night, and when realizing that she was too drunk to drive home, she did the responsible thing and took a cab. Unfortunately, Garcia forgot to pay the cab driver when they arrived at her house, likely due to her intoxication. It is true that Garcia was in the wrong for stiffing the cab driver, but this hardly justifies a warrantless search and the shooting of an animal, this is a very simple matter that could have been resolved very quickly and easily if the police were not so quick to escalation and aggression.

Big AG tech giants Monsanto - maker of Agent Orange, genetically modified seeds, weed whacking chemicals - and Bayer - famed for manufacturing poison gas forNazi concentration camp use, heroin, baby aspirin, and systemic pesticides - are merging, much to the horror of food security advocates, consumers, and non-zombies worldwide.
CNN Money declared the Monsanto Bayer merger "the year's biggest takeover." Symbolically, it's the merger of the century. At $66 billion, it's also the biggest cash transaction on record. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders describes the mega deal as "a threat to all Americans."
"These mergers boost the profits of huge corporations and leaves Americans paying even higher prices," he said.
If things unfold as planned, the new company (MonBayer? BaySanto? Or should they just call themselves Poisonous?) will generate approximately 50 percent of its revenue from selling "medicine" and the other half from agriculture. How convenient. They can make us sick with their poisonous, genetically modified faux food, and then treat us with their treadmill of drugs.

Gone are the days when teachers broke up fights and sent the kids home, calling the parents and perhaps suspending the kid if it was a serious incident. "School Resource Officers" or local cops now arrest the kids and, if there is any perceived injury (an arbitrary judgment), will charge them with third-degree assault - treating children cooped up in school as if they are violent adults on the streets.
It doesn't stop there. Even attempts or threats to cause harm will be treated as a Class A misdemeanor, which can bring up to a year of prison time. If the assaulted person is considered a "special victim," a Class D felony can be imposed which can mean up to seven years in prison.

Americans are being told that the virtuous course in Syria is to fight the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian partners. We are supposed to hope that a righteous coalition of Americans, Turks, Saudis, Kurds, and the "moderate opposition" will win.
This is convoluted nonsense, but Americans cannot be blamed for believing it. We have almost no real information about the combatants, their goals, or their tactics. Much blame for this lies with our media.

In the full report (pdf), the intelligence committee neglects to mention Snowden's well-documented critique of the Russian government at the same time that it charges-with no evidence-that the whistleblower is in contact with Russian spy agencies.
The committee also seems to characterize Snowden as a bad employee for his repeated efforts to report concerns to higher-ups, but then goes on to argue that Snowden should have reported the NSA's mass surveillance practices to the NSA inspector general (despite documented retaliation against whistleblowers at multiple government agencies, including the NSA).
"Bottom line: this report's core claims are made without evidence, and are often contrary to both common sense and the public record," Snowden tweeted.
In a statement, Snowden's lawyer Ben Wizner, who also directs the ACLU's Speech, Privacy & Technology Project, dismissed the report as he defended his client's motivation for leaking the information to journalists.
"The House committee spent three years and millions of dollars in a failed attempt to discredit Edward Snowden, whose actions led to the most significant intelligence reforms in a generation," Wizner said. "The report wholly ignores Snowden's repeated and courageous criticism of Russian surveillance and censorship laws. It combines demonstrable falsehoods with deceptive inferences to paint an entirely fictional portrait of an American whistleblower."

A disturbing video documenting yet another instance of police brutality against Black people in the United States has been making the rounds, where a mother attempted to report an assault by a white man against her 7-year-old son - only to have herself, and her daughter, be violently attacked and ultimately, arrested by a police officer.

Daily News columnist Gersh Kuntzman is doubling-down on his celebratory-but-not-celebratory-but-obviously-celebratory take (12/20/16) on the December 19 murder of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov by an off-duty Turkish police officer. His follow-up column, "Vladimir Putin Is Demanding an Apology From Me!" (12/21/16), came a day after Kutzman openly justified the killing of Karlov in the United States' sixth-largest newspaper.
Predictably, calling for the assassination of Russian diplomats in such a large forum upset the Russian government, and President Vladimir Putin has since asked for an apology from the paper's editor. But Kuntzman, polishing his Bold Truth-Teller bona fides, used the opportunity to posture and further troll the world's largest nuclear power. This exercise in pseudo-courage came complete with front-page tabloid-taunting ("Yeah Right, Vlad") Thursday morning, and a hastily made "wanted poster" by some poor Daily News graphics intern:
