The New Yorker columnist Robin Wright asks: Is Trump Yet Another U.S. President Provoking a War?

"The United States has a long history of provoking, instigating, or launching wars based on dubious, flimsy, or manufactured threats."

Cases mentioned:

1986, the Reagan Administration ... warship provocations near Libya

2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq .... "active weapons-of-mass-destruction programs"

1964 The beginning of the Vietnam War .... U.S. warships "attack" in the Gulf of Tonkin.

In 1898, the Spanish-American War .... explosion on the U.S.S. Maine,

"In 1846, President James Polk justified the Mexican-American War by claiming that Mexico had invaded U.S. territory, at a time when the border was not yet settled."

No mention of Venezuela, yet.

"On May 5th, [2019] a Sunday, the White House issued an unusual communiqué-from the national-security adviser, John Bolton, not the Pentagon-announcing that a battleship-carrier strike group, led by the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, and a bomber task force, including B-52s, were deploying off Iran's coast."

"Bolton claimed that the Islamic Republic was engaged in 'a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,' but did not provide specifics."

The Times of Isreal reports:
"Israelis raised alarm at White House 2 weeks ago - Israel TV
Report: Mossad intel of looming Iranian attack led US to send in carrier force

"Deploying USS Abraham Lincoln to vicinity of Iran, US National Security Adviser John Bolton says it came after 'a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings'

"Israel's Mossad intelligence agency reportedly tipped off the United States on an impending Iranian attack on American interests in the Gulf, prompting Washington to deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the region late Sunday, in a sharp escalation of US President Donald Trump's pressure campaign.

"John Bolton, Trump's national security adviser who advocated attacking Iran before taking up the post, announced late Sunday that the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group would sail to unspecified waters in the vicinity of Iran."

But is Mossad a neutral observer?
